Google and Collective Wisdom
Surje & Company 2/28/2007
by Sunny Bhasin

Google, widely considered one of the most successful companies of the modern era, employs the concept of collective wisdom in virtually all its activities. For instance, the power of its page-rank system is based on the collective intelligence of all the website creators and administrators in the world. Google's remarkable search results are driven by algorithms that rank websites based on the importance given them by other websites.

Although there may be limited information in the mass media on this, insiders have frequently commented on fact that Google values the concept and power of collective wisdom so much so, that it uses an internal "ranking" system to consider, evaluate, and reach decisions on product launches, business direction, and other critical decisions.

The reason companies such as Google and many others are succeeding using this powerful methodology, is largely due to the collective wisdom having unmatched forecasting power. This is relevant to product development, defining strategic direction, operational planning, etc. This ability of a diverse group to predict more accurately than any individual on their own, is emerging as a powerful tool in the hands of economists and statisticians, and other areas where the ability to more-correctly predict is considered integral to success.

Surje & Company employs the power of collective wisdom as one of the foundations of the Surje Integrative Process
TM. The process harnesses the intelligence contained within groups, both within our case teams and within our clients' organizations, to create superior results.
