In the Winter 2007 issue of Rotman Magazine, Dean Roger Martin and Professor
Mihnea Moldoveanu write on the challenges facing problem-solvers
in increasingly complex environments and the value in using the
Integrative Thinking approach to become a high-value decision
maker. The article, entitled Designing the Thinker of the
Future, serves as both a primer on the concept of
Integrative Thinking for those not familiar with the model as
well as a critique of the limitations of the common approach to
decision making.
In the article, Martin and Moldoveanu state that “…predicaments
do not come packaged as specialized problem statements, and it
is up to the high value decision maker to choose between
radically different approaches.” The challenge as to how to
decide between different approaches to complex, pervasive
problems is one that many managers are increasingly familiar
with and the article provides readers with a synopsis of how the
Rotman School of Management is teaching its students to thrive
in such situations.
Surje & Company is similarly focused on providing consulting
methods that recognize the changing nature of business and that
new, innovative approaches to solving problems and helping
companies reach their goals are required. The Surje Integrative
Process has been designed to solve problems of collaboration,
cooperation and complexity and it is grounded in a philosophical
framework that has much in common with the ideas expressed in
Designing the Thinker of the Future.
